COMMUNITY SERVICE

Every Young Marine is strongly encouraged to perform Community Service within their home towns and surrounding areas.  In fact, in order to be promoted to Young Marine Lance Corporal a Young Marine must have 50 hours of community service within a 12 month period.  Old Colony Young Marines has been extremely active in Plymouth County.

During the 2005 Holiday Season the Old Colony Young Marines collected over $13,000 worth of new toy donations in support of the United States Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program.  These toys were distributed to families in need throughout Plymouth and Barnstable Counties.

Memorial Day is a busy time for Old Colony Young Marines as part of our Community's celebration and commemoration of Memorial Day.   The unit marches in the Plymouth Memorial Day Parade and also works with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to replace worn United States Flags over the graves of our veterans in the town cemetery on the Saturday before Memorial Day.

Old Colony Young Marines also assists church food pantries in Plymouth, helps the Veterans of Foreign Wars pack care packages for our servicemen and women overseas, helped with Family Days for a Family Readiness Group for a unit of the Massachusetts Army National Guard that was deployed overseas, and has also helped to restore the USS Salem at the US Naval Shipbuilding Museum in Quincy, MA.
